John IV Laskaris

John IV Laskaris
Emperor of Nicaea (qq.v.) from 1258-1261. He reigned, but never really ruled. Born the son of Theodore II Laskaris (q.v.) in 1250, this child-emperor was at the mercy of Michael (VIII) Palaiologos after his father's death in August 1258. Michael murdered the regent George Mouzalon the following month and had himself crowned co-emperor with John in January 1259. In 1261, after the recovery of Constantinople (q.v.), Michael blinded John on Christmas Day and confined him to a prison, where he outlived Michael VIII, dying ca. 1305. Michael VIII's son An-dronikos II (q.v.) visited John in 1284 and begged his forgiveness.
